Stay motivated & keep your resolutions!
by Josh Dyer
A new year and a new decade make this year the perfect time for a fresh start. However, with just a week to go until the end of January, the quarter of us that made New Year’s resolutions may be beginning to struggle, if not having thrown in the towel already! The top three resolutions for 2020 are all health-focused: exercising more, losing weight, and eating healthier. Unfortunately, statistics show that 76% of people that made these resolutions do not stick to them. If you’re one of those people and you want to start again, or you’re beginning to feel the struggle we’ve got some top tips to help you stay motivated!
If you are planning on starting again, or perhaps didn’t make a resolution but want to make a change, then choosing your goal is one of the most important aspects. Studies show that those who actually manage to achieve their resolutions tend to be passionate about them from the outset. If you have had the same resolution for the last three years and given up by the end of the first week, try swapping it for a change you really want to see in your life.
Usually, the advice is to set realistic and achievable resolutions if you want to be successful. However, recent research suggests that having a big life goal as your resolution will have a greater effect in the long term. Simply work back and plan lots of smaller targets building up to achieving your final goal. Upping the ante by having a greater goal to achieve may just be the push you need if you are struggling. If your resolution is to lose 2 stone by the end of the year then break it down into smaller weekly or monthly targets.
If you are starting to struggle with your resolution then another solution to stay motivated is to try mixing it up. While there are benefits to following a routine it can begin to feel stale after a few weeks and so adding in new aspects can really help to freshen it up. If your resolution is to exercise more but your routine has become tiresome then why not try out a different class or sport each week.
For most of us, a stumble along the way is all it takes to completely throw us off the path. The key is to not give up straight away, instead learn from your slip-up and carry on; why did it happen and how can you prevent it from happening again in the future? If your resolution is to eat healthier but you accidentally overindulge then don’t write off the day or week, instead dive straight back into healthy eating.
